G

Guiri

[‘gi.ri]

Foreigner tourist (normally blond, with white skin and light eyes) who doesn’t speak much Spanish.

We’d never call guiri to a Turkish, Chinese or Kenyan person.

Some people think Spaniards use this word contemptuously, but most of us do it kindly -you’ll know it by the context and intonation.

The origin of this word isn’t clear but some think it may come from the word guiri-gay, which means «incomprehensive language».

  • Había muchos guiris en Málaga.
  • A los guiris les encanta el sol y la playa.
